Just another Edublogs.org weblog

Quibblo

I was wanting to create another quiz and joined up with Quibblo. Again, this program wants you to become a member, give them access to your email account then once your a member you find out that its not a very got quiz creator. You only get to select one type of question asked, ‘multiple choice’. So again i’m going back to Proprofs where i made this Quiz very easy.. i’m starting to enjoy making my quizzes here as its so simple to use.

Moodle

Completing my peer review i was instructed to create a quiz using Moddle. I found it quite easy to use and like the functions and variety of questions you could use to make the quiz more engaeing for the students. However i joined Moodle last night to create my own quiz for my VLE, and I spent at least one hour trying to figure it out. All i could find was information on how to create it, i even you tube it and again only instruction on how to create the quiz… nothing actually showed me how from the main page of Moodle do you create it. I.e.’The Quiz activity module allows the teacher to design and set quizzes consisting of a large variety of question types, including multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions. These questions are kept in the Question bank and can be re-used in multiple quizzes. Quizzes can be configured to allow multiple attempts. Each attempt is automatically marked, and the teacher can choose whether to give feedback and/or show the correct answers’.
You click on the tab ‘adding/updating a quiz and your provide with, ‘Creating a new quiz is a two-step process. In the first step you create the quiz activity and set its options which specify the rules for interacting with the quiz. In a second step you will then edit the quiz to add questions to it. This page describes the options you can set for the quiz activity, the page Editing a quiz describes how to set up the questions for the quiz’. This is all good, but how do I create my quiz???? After frustration set in, i then moved onto a quiz creation website called ProProfs Quiz Maker.

View my quiz here

As you can see its a very basic quiz, with very little visual engagement. This website was very straighforward and i created my quiz with ease. i wouldn’t suggest this as a good quiz for students as they will become bored after 5 or 6 questions. What are your thoughts? I like Moodle’s quiz creation better and still wanting to know how.. Does anyone know??

Mashup

Looking up ‘mashup’ on the internet brought me to a program named ProgrammableWeb. This website keeps you up to date with web mashups and APIs. At present they are 2009 APIs, Application Program Interface, and 4839 mashups. Your able to see the mashup of the day, and new mashups that have been created. One is called TinkOMatic.

Its a great way for people to be able to create a webpage that has everything they want to view in one page. I suppose its like iGoogle, where you have linked feeds you want into a aggregator.

Another website discussing mashups is ‘Education mashups for the 21st century‘.

National Curriculum

Hi all,
Just a quick post, here is the link to the draft of the new national curriculum, www.acara.edu.au. All public are invited to help ‘shape it’. I believe its only open till the 30th of May, but not 100% sure, does anyone know? Thanks

Funny

Whilst searching for images I came across these funny cartoons..

Download?

Mobile phone

Is this how technology is going to effect out students? Will technology take over all our means of communication?

Wish I could draw and create funny cartoons like this!

Wiki

Ok so I’ve spend all day yesterday and nearly all day today trying to construct my Wiki. I’m still unsure of what the discussion tabs are used for! I’ve put the question out on twitter and I thought I’d do the same here. Does anyone know? Are they just meant for members to leave posts/comments? Thanks

Elluminate

I haven’t used Elluminate before so i went onto you tube to see a tutorial. Here it is:

After watching this I can see how simple it is to use. I think it would be a great online class tool as it is live, you can text, use chat and even video. You are able to use a whiteboard, and even upload PowerPoints. Users are able to communicate effectively by using these functions along with the polling function. I find it basically like a classroom apart from everyone being behind a computer where ever they are. I’m going to set up my own little classroom and test it out.
I found a case study where Elluminate has helped not only students at school but also for online education, which is great for adults. Take a look.

Apple rejects Flash

After reading comments on Twitter i came across this post, ‘There are going to be a stack of unusable learning objects lying around now that both Apple & Microsoft have pulled the pin on Flash’, iKonstrukt. This got me thinking about this situation and wanted to find out more. I came across an article from FT.com explaining why Apple has ‘pulled the pin’ on Flash, currently controlled by Adobe. The article states that Flash videos ‘drained devices’ batteries twice as fast as those encoded in other formats; that Flash was the leading cause of system crashes on Apple’s Mac computers and that Flash programmes performed poorly on mobile devices’, Flash video rejection explained by apple.  Does this really impact the education system? I suppose it still comes down to the debate on the use mobile phones in class. If we as educators are going to use mobile phones in the classroom, then I agree with what Apple have decided. Many educators would not want there mobile phone systems crashing every time they and their students open a Flash video. This would cause frustration leading to bad teaching practice and disengaged students. However, Apple are still wanting to use Flash if its controlled by Android, which is currently being developed. Therefore if this becomes successful then the unusable learning objects will be useable again.

Symbaloo

After looking at Tim’s blog I saw that he had commented on Symbaloo. After looking at it, I find that it has similar characterisitcs to iGoogle. It’s basically used as a ‘startup page, personal desktop for the internet’, (Symbaloo, 2010). Therefore you can add your favourite websites, check your emails, read the news and more. I’ve already got this as iGoogle however I may try it to see which is better. If you want to have a look click here Symbaloo.

Notes for reusable learning object and SCORM

I found these notes written by Michael GRant. I’m trying to embedded them in my blog but of course, it’s not working.. so i’ll attach the link.
